Mc Donnell Cup Round 1 Vs Rush

After 3 successive finals the McDonnell Cup team is looking to go 4 in a row and go one better having come up just short last year. First round this year brought familiar foes in Rush, like ourselves a 9 hole links.

We had 3 matches at home and first up were The Reliables,  Robbie Lyons Jnr and Bryan Gaffney. They were up early and never relinquished a comfortable lead to get an early point on the board. Next up was interclub debutant Sam Walters in the company of the experienced Se O'Leary. One of the Rush players was shockingly slow which had a significant effect on the match early on but ultimately the lads had too much for their opposition and pulled away on the back 9. Lastly at home were McDonnell veterans Paul Leech and Chris Long (although they won't thank me for the term!) and similarly to match 2 after being rather nip and tuck on the front 9 they pulled away on the back to give us an unassailable 3-nil lead.

Proceedings in Rush only got going an hour after the last match in Sutton had teed off and up first were last year's hero (He still hasn't stopped talking about it!!) Martin Griffin with debutant Bermard Sweeney. The lads were ahead from the start and were comfortably ahead when called in. Lastly were Malcom Stafford and Mark Quill who had a rocky start going 4 down early. However they showed great resilience to claw their way back into the match and were about to go all square when called in (at least that's what they told me !!)

Thanks to the Vice Captain for supporting Fintan and the lads in Rush and to the Dereks (Hunter and Dunne) for looking after matters at home

Local rivals and neighbours await in the next round on Saturday 23rd when we will have 2 games at home and 3 up the hill, all support welcome
